Saturday, April 21, 2018 was a great day to explore Cleveland on two wheels with friends, new and old.
There were four social rides planned and scheduled by bike shops and local cycling clubs. I had the day off from work, and I wanted to enjoy riding in all the rides with fellow bike friends. I have to say though, it was a joy to experience them from a participant rider view.
Ride #1 – Performance Mayfield
I began riding with Performance the summer of 2017. I continued riding with them during the winter months with their indoor training sessions. This was the 1st time riding with them outdoors for 2018. The previous times I’ve rolled with Performance outdoors, I would only come when the rides were the Gates Mills locations. This ride was the North or South Chagrin route. I really liked that route. It was a mix of road and the metro parks, and the scenery was absolutely beautiful.
From Mayfield to Cleveland Heights, quick photo opportunity at the “Big Water” in Shaker Heights.
Ride #2 – Heights Bicycle Coalition
Heights Bicycle Coalition advertised a social ride on Saturday from Fairfax elementary school to Public Square. The goal of the ride was to visit the underground catacombs of the Soldiers and Sailors monument on the square for free or visit the observation deck of terminal tower for a fee of $5. The ride was attended by four Cleveland Heights residents, three of them named Gary. It was a great ride down to Public Square and I learned a few shortcuts along the way. We arrived to Public Square, however the line was entirely too long to visit the catacombs. It was at least a 2 hour wait. We decided not to wait.
Refuel & Recharge
Otani Noodle provided warm and delicious noodle bowls, tea, rice, shrimp & fish balls to refuel our bodies. In addition to electrical outlets to recharge our mobile devices.
Public Square to Cleveland Museum of Art
Ride #3 – Positive Spin 216
This was the inaugural ride 2018 for Positive Spin 216 social bicycle rides led by Kevin Jones. We arrived to the starting point of the Cleveland Museum of Art in just amount of time where we did not need to cool down. Kevin began informing us of his plans for the ride including the route, the destinations and the distance of 20 miles. It was a great ride from the east to the west, w/ Mitchell’s ice cream as a treat. We didn’t ride 20 miles though, majority overruled the riding to Edgewater as he planned for us.
UH Hospital to Cleveland Heights to return to vehicle.
I went home to hang up the roadie, and grab the 29’r for the towpath trail. Skinny wheel tires and crushed limestone are not the best of friends on the towpath.
Ride #4 – Night Ride on the Towpath
Century Cycles Peninsula location began their night rides on the towpath series for 2018. The starting location was actually not at the store in Peninsula, it was at the Station Ridge location in Brecksville. I believe there is construction happening on the towpath as to why the starting location was different normal, but I am not for certain, I just ride my bike. I was rolled solo for this ride, and I brought Beychella to the Towpath. The ride is a back and forth ride, from Station Ridge to Rockside, then return. I rode to Rockside, and called it quits for the day.
Finished & Done
I initially thought I would accumulate about 40 miles combined with four social rides. Ya know, about 10 miles each, right? I definitely underestimated myself. 60 miles in one day, longest ride to date for 2018. I wanted my Strava to record each ride consecutively, which would create the Relive video for the entire day. Enjoy the video below 🙂
2018 is the year for great rides near and far. I claimed it 2017 and it is coming to fruition so far. I have 516 miles ridden out of a 2018 mile goal for this year.
I’m Ready To Do It Again!!! Come Ride Along, Fun Times Will Be Had By All!
